How Dry Eye Disease Develops & How to Treat It

man with dry eye sneeze

Dry eye disease is an increasingly common eye condition that can happen either because the eye is not producing enough tears, or because tears are evaporating too quickly, leaving the eyes without enough moisture to function comfortably.

This can happen for several reasons including allergies, side effects from medications, hormonal changes, and illness.

Depending on the cause and exact symptoms of your dry eyes, our Beavercreek eye doctors will be able to prescribe treatments and medications aimed at increasing the amount of tears your eye produces and/or slowing the evaporation of tears to better hydrate your eyes.

What Are the Main Causes of Dry Eye?

  • Aging

Dry eye disease tends to affect people over the age of 50. This is because tear production slows as we age. As the lacrimal glands produce fewer tears, dry eye develops.

  • Hormonal changes

It's not uncommon for some women to experience dry eye symptoms during pregnancy, menopause, or while using birth control pills. That's because hormone imbalances can reduce tear production.

  • Autoimmune disease

Certain autoimmune diseases, like Sjögren’s syndrome, can cause white blood cells to attack your tear glands, thus reducing tear production. Other diseases like arthritis, lupus, and diabetes can also cause poor or insufficient tear production.

  • Medications

Certain medications can reduce mucus production (one of the 3 tear components) thus contributing to chronic dry eye.

They include antihistamines, antidepressants, diuretics, and beta-blockers.

Note that this is just a handful of causes. There are many other factors that can contribute to dry eye, including pollution and dry air, allergies, poor tear quality, dehydration, contact lens wear, and more.

I love that the office does price matching with my contacts. It is nice to go to an optometry practi... ce that is not a big retail setting knowing that I am getting fair pricing.

Best eye doctor I've had in years. I've had glasses since I was 6 and contacts since 10 previously I... 've had doctors continually dismiss my astigmatism and even told me that I couldn't possibly correct it with contacts, I believed I would never see 20/20 with contacts, within 10 minutes of being taken back not only did DR. Tran tell me it could in fact be corrected but got me a pair to immediately try. Dr. Tran was very kind and helpful and even explained things that have never been explained to me before. The lady that helped me order my contacts even helped me get the best price, I've been switching offices for years but this really makes me want to stay with this office.

I cannot say enough great things about this office! The staff are very friendly and helpful. My doct... or- Dr. Tran, I wish he could be my doctor for everything! He shows he truly cares about his patients, remembering details of previous conversations, and goes out of his way to ensure you are getting what you need. Unlike most doctors today, he doesn't make you feel rushed and will answer any questions you have and take the time to explain them. This office is the best!

The last behind the desk, I believe her name is Penny, she was so amazing and so sweet. Probably the... nicest person I have ever made contact with in a professional setting. She literally brightened my daughter's and my day with her wonderful energy, making us also feel so welcome. The guy begging the counter was so amazing too! He spoke with the doctor for my daughter and was able to get her in the next day because she was having pain in her eye, which turned out to be a scratch. The doctor was also so nice and so sweet. She made my daughter feel so comfortable, especially since she was super nervous. I absolutely loved this place and all their staff. This is definitely where my entire family will be coming from here on out! Thank you so much! I highly highly recommend this place for all of your families eye care needs!

This is the best place to go in the dayton area. Penny greets you at the front desk and has a cheerf... ul smile. The Dr's. are extremely helpful and take the time with there patients. Lisa was so very kind, sweet hearted. She helped myself and my four year old to pick out glasses and get them ordered. Betty was helpful when we picked up our glasses and took the time we needed with my daughter, we greatly appreciate all the staff and the hard work they do each and every day.

Dry Eyes FAQs

Can I still wear contact lenses if I have dry eye syndrome?

Yes, some people can still wear contact lenses with dry eye syndrome. However, depending on its severity, you may need to carefully select the adequate contact lens for optimal clarity and comfort.

Oftentimes, because contact lenses sit on the eye, it's difficult for vital oxygen to reach the eye. This can worsen dry eye symptoms, and increase the risk of scratching or otherwise damaging your eye. Make sure to ask your eye doctor which contact lenses are most adapted to your condition.

Can dry eye syndrome be cured?

Unfortunately, there is no known cure for dry eye syndrome. There are, however, many treatment options that offer lasting dry eye relief.

Can dry eye syndrome cause blindness?

In rare extreme cases, dry eye syndrome can cause corneal ulcers. These ulcers can result in scarring on the eye, making it difficult for the cornea to focus light accurately. If left untreated, corneal ulcers and the associated scarring can result in blindness.

How can I prevent dry eye symptoms?

Below are a few tips that will help prevent dry eye symptoms:

  • Point fans, heaters, and air vents so that they don’t directly blow into your eyes
  • Eat foods high in omega-3 fatty acids
  • Stay properly hydrated
  • Take breaks during long tasks, especially those that require extended visual focus
